Pumpkin Walk – Cache Valley Podcast

Hey Everybody, welcome back to the Cache Valley Podcast! This episode was such a fun one to do. We got to talk, and learn all about the Pumpkin Walk with Gina Worthen. Gina has been working with the Pumpkin Walk crew for quite some time. She has worked as everything from a volunteer making the scenes, all the way to working directly on the Pumpkin Walk committee. We really enjoyed learning more about the Pumpkin Walk’s history, why it’s stayed FREE all these years, and getting some of Gina’s thoughts on the Pumpkin Walk.

The Interview

How did you get involved with the Pumpkin Walk?

In 1997, Gina got involved with the Pumpkin walk via a friend that was involved with it. When asked, she was super excited to get an invite and to become involved in such a wonderful tradition.

How did the Pumpkin Walk get started?

Ida Beutler, who at that time was a North Logan resident and school teacher, started this wonderful tradition in 1983. She loved Holloween and wanted to do something that was really fun (without being scary) for the children in her neighborhood. So, she set up a display of pumpkins on her and her husbands’ property for people to come and enjoy.

However, that year some boys came by and vandalized the display. The police picked up these boys and took them straight back to Ida. Ida, being the sweet lady that she was, invited them in, and told them that they should come back next year and make the display even better then it had been that year. And they did! Ida also went through and rounded up neighbors, including Nancy Isrealsen, a local artist (who passed away at the age of 93, earlier this summer). Ida and company set up a wonderful display right their on their farm on 1600 E in North Logan. The community absolutely loved it! They would even string electrical cords across the canal to the Beutler’s farm to help power the various lights for the scenes.

The Pumpkin Walk became popular so fast that it was a real challenge for them to keep up with. Especially with the wonderful fresh baked cookies and apple cider that Ida and company provided. Eventually, North Logan City reached out and asked if they could adopt is as their own. Ida agreed, with a few conditions. The first is that it would always be free and that there wouldn’t be any advertisements.

In 1992, the Pumpkin walk moved from the Beutler farm to Elkridge Park, where it is still held today.

How has the Pumpkin Walk stayed free?

North Logan city provides some of the funding for the pumpkin walk, as well as several sponsors such as Rocky Mountain Power, Lee’s Marketplace, and several others. Also, all of the volunteer work that’s done in building the scenes and setting up the pumpkin walk is done completely free by community volunteers.

Is there a set theme every year, and if so what is the theme for this year?

There is a set theme every year, and this year’s theme for this year is “Where in the World”. Each scene will be a different location from around the world. Each year they try to choose a different theme to focus the creative energies of everyone involved focused on one thing. They try extra hard to make sure that it’s something the entire community will enjoy. The people that come to the pumpkin walk to enjoy the creations, as well as the people that are creating them.

Do you have a favorite theme or scene?

The year that people seemed to remember, and have enjoyed the most was “The Magic of Animation”. There were a lot of Dr. Seuss scenes and Disney/Pixar scenes. All the children that came enjoyed it and were able to pick out their favorite characters.

The one that Gina remembers the most is the year that they made a cowboy town. During that year there were scenes that included Matt Dillon, John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, characters from Bonanza, and even one that was a saloon! (keep in mind this is all built with vegetables).

Are there any rules on what you can use/how much you can use?

There isn’t a limit, and it’s amazing what people will come up with! The only limitation is their imagination.

If you go this year, be sure to look for the names Sandy Ballard and Janet Jepson, and see if you can spot all the different ways she uses the vegetables. Last year they made an entire Star Wars scene, with Ewoks, Chewbacca, and all the familiar characters.

What has been your favorite part of being involved in the Pumpkin Walk over the years?

Gina has loved all the different parts that she’s been a part of. She loves the creativity involved in it all. Being able to be involved in the creative process with such a unique artistic medium (of pumpkins) presents an interesting, and fun time! She also enjoys walking around and seeing others enjoy the event and the creations that everyone made. Just as her friend, Nancy Isrealsen, would say “that’s our pay” referring to the happiness she saw when people came to the pumpkin walk.

Is Cache Valley Transit going to be running buses again this year?

yes, they are. They are still working out the minor details but they will for sure be there. It really helps with getting people up to there safely and efficiently. Last year, CVT took 19,000 people on the buses of the 25,000+ people that come to the Pumpkin walk each year!

If I wanted to participate (create a scene, helping out, donating) How would I?

The best way to see what you can do is to go to the Pumpkin Walk’s Volunteer Page and see all the available roles. Another really cool thing available is Eagle Scout projects. So if you or someone you know needs a pretty awesome Eagle Scout Project, be sure to visit the Volunteer Page.

How many Pumpkins are there in the Pumpkin Walk

In total there are roughly 1000+ pumpkins across the whole walk. This includes the scenes, the specialty pumpkins at the end, and all the other pumpkins used in the pumpkin walk.

When is the Pumpkin Walk Happening?

October 18th, 19th, 20th, 22nd, & 23rd, 2018 from 9 am to 10 pm.
